Nessebar
NESSEBUR is one of the most ancient towns in Europe. It is situated 22 miles north-east of Bourgas and 15 miles from the airport.

The old quarter of the town, situated on the Nessebur Peninsula and linked to the mainland by a narrow neck of land, has been announced by UNESCO to be a monument of culture with world wide significance. You can see there a great preserved fortress wall, monuments from the time of Byzantium, churches and splendid architecture of the Bulgarian and national Revival.
The old buildings are restored and new ones are build in an authentic style. North and south of the peninsula stretch beach strips covered with the finest sand along the Black Sea coast. To the north these are linked with the beaches of Sunny Beach.
Nessebar lies nestling along a romantic peninsula It’s cobblestone streets, well-kept medieval churches and timbered houses from the 19th century lend the place its particular charm. In fact, due to its chequered past Nessebar's churches can be best described as a cross between Slav and Greek orthodox architecture - some of the finest in the area.
You can stroll for hours through its streets, looking at the wide choice of local street wares on offer or else head for the shade of the many churches and museums to capture some-thing of Nessebar’s rich and exotic past.
Nessebar has a good selection of private accommodation, very often in grand old houses from the previous century. You will never run out of places to eat and drink in Nessebar - it has a wide choice of restaurants, taverns and cafes.
Nessebar is best known for the old town (about 9000 years) on the peninsula. No one can say for sure whether the isthmus is natural or man-made. The largest number and best known buildings date from 11th to 14th centuries almost all of them churchies in the so called "picturesque" style: walls intersected by pilasters and lunettes, with stone, brick and ceramic ornaments and arches along the cornice. Some of the churches are among the best preserved ones in the Balkan Peninsula.
In the Old town of Nessebar the fences of the houses are high, to protect the privacy of those living inside. Built out of stone, they leave you with a feeling of walking between fortifications. Streets are narrow , covered with stone , the mediterranean spirit is in the air.....The wooden upper floors of the houses are forming an arch over your head.
